Prairie Days

These are all spit ball ideas. I don't know what we will end up doing, but I want to have ideas collected and we'll see what sounds good that day :)

Settler Side:

The plan is to have our own landrun like what we did when we were in grade school. Talk about how the wagon was home until they built a home. No contract work, you had to build your home yourself. Chop the trees and everything. I did pick up a little axe... yes, real. I think Ellie and Kai will have no problem trying to wield it on one of the many saplings we are taking down anyway.

I am going to put a pulley on a tree limb and fill a bucket of water so they can get an idea of what it would have been like to pull water from a well and carry it back home.

Make a yarn doll

Make taffy!

Native Side:

Make a small (like big enough for them to get into, but not an adult) teepee and talk about why this was the best choice for a migrating group of people. Maybe even hook a harness to the pyrenees or dane and see if they are willing to cooperate moving it. I picked up some cheap drapes at target ($10 a piece way cheaper than buying the equivalent in material) and I intend to have some examples of native art for them to imitate painting the canvas.

Talk about why they migrated, hunter/gatherers vs the settlers who farmed. Talk about pros and cons of both.

Talk about animals that are native to this area that would have been in competition with those living here native and settler alike.

Make a dream catcher.

Make a small scale Navajo hogan home.
