Oklahoma History Center

I was pleasantly surprised by the OK History Center. After the Territorial museum last week I had low expectations :p It was homeschool day, but not too crowded. We got there when they opened and there were tons of extra activities set up for the kids to watch and do. There was sand painting, they got to make a paper bag satchel, and help use a loom. There was a lady explaining how natives used all parts of the animals they ate, porcupine tails for brushes, bison bladders for water jugs. That last one was a little disturbing for Kai and Ellie! "They drank out of what??" There was a smith set up outside as well as a cook's wagon. They had a apple pie cooked by the time we left..... I had hoped they were passing out samples, but they weren't :(

I was entertaining littles at this point and didn't get to see what was on this table, but the bigger kids were very interested.

As for the museum itself I enjoyed the hands on exhibits. The kids got to put on real cowboy gear and sit on a saddle. There was a wagon they could climb all over and of course everyone wanted to drive :) There was a teepee migration, the wood that would be tied to the horse went into the wall where there was a painting of a horse, so the kids got to climb all over that. The kids enjoyed sitting at the old schoolhouse desks. There was a trolley car they got to sit in. I enjoyed the Native American exhibit.

There was a civil rights movement section of the museum we didn't spend too much time in since the kids were getting hungry. Our trip ended when Howler started playing escapee and had a complete meltdown. We also missed out on a movie exhibit. We were there for three hours.. There is a ton of things to go through at this museum. We will definitely be going back.

In case you're looking for other museums to go to here are a few other things going on geared for homeschoolers or free:

They have a homeschool day every month.

National Cowboy & Western Heritage Logo
