Groundhog Day

A friend of mine with her three kiddos came over on Friday for a Groundhog Day party. Unfortunately, I was having too much fun to remember to take pictures so here's us repeating the activities ON Groundhog Day.

I made a groundhog burrow (idea from this site) out of a tarp, duct tape and a fan. The kids pretended to hibernate, then came out to see their shadow (or not). We looked at pictures, listened to groundhog noises, and learned lots of ground hog facts from this site. We read this Hibernation .

Then on to the science experiment. Each kid got one hand wrapped in shortening and the other left bare.

Then they stick both hands into a tub of freezing cold water. This it to help them understand why the animals that hibernate eat so much before going into their den. They layer on fat not only to sustain their body while they sleep, but also to insulate them to keep them warm.

Pudding anyone? One of our friends was supposed to join us on Friday, but her kids came down sick (We missed you Jennie!). She was going to bring groundhog cups, but when they couldn't come I decided these were too cute to miss. Chocolate pudding on bottom, oreo cookies (Yes, i know it's supposed to JUST be the wafers to look more like dirt. In my groundhog world it snowed February 1st, so there!), and a teddy graham bear stuck in to his head.

I was going to make one of these finger puppets for each kid, but my girls weren't that impressed with him so I ditched that idea. Yeah, he's not beautiful, but he was my 'rough sketch'. Tamarin felt like he should have had teeth instead of a smile.... well, that makes sense. Smart kid.

I made these ears out of felt and a plain plastic headband. I wish I had thought of this before Saturday morning. I would have made a set for each kid. Tamarin has been wearing them all weekend. The great thing is, the ears slide off, so I can make other ears (pointed, floppy) and we can add this to our dress up box.

This was so much fun! Thanks, Jessie, for bringing lunch! We have to do it again soon!
